A SOLAR TRAIN TO GO AND VISIT THE GRAND CANYON

Two slightly crazy entrepreneurs dream to use solar energy to power a high speed train through the deserts of Arizona.

The challenge is as vast as the Arizonian landscapes! Two entrepreneurs are pursuing a dream: to build a high speed railway track connecting Phoenix, the capital city of the State, to Tucson, the second biggest city of Arizona. To power the “Solar Bullet” train, which will reach 350 km/h, they are betting on a free and abundant resource available in this south-western State of the United-States: the sun. Solar panels would be mounted above the railway tracks, supplying electricity both to the train and to the inhabitants of the cities served. Two tracks would be dedicated to trains connecting Phoenix to Tucson non-stop, thus reducing the journey to half an hour, versus two hours and a half currently. Two separate tracks would be used by trains stopping at the cities along the way. The developers of the Solar Bullet Train hope to see it operate in 2018. All they have to do now is to raise the 27 million dollars needed for its construction! Once Phoenix and Tucson are connected, the Solar Bullet Train could continue its journey in a northerly direction towards the Grand Canyon. The thousands of tourists going there each year could enjoy the spectacular landscapes of the Arizonian deserts from their seats. The Solar Bullet Train is still at the project stage but it shows that a cultural revolution is under way in a country which always banked entirely on planes and motorways. Early 2010, President Obama announced a vast construction plan for high speed railway tracks throughout the country. He considers it a way of fighting against greenhouse gas emissions without hindering people’s mobility.
